Cultural Terms

There are a number of term in various cultures which are used to refer to a Witch. It is important to understand these cultural differences when discussing the term. Some of the terms refer to those who follow a specific path within Witchcraft, others refer to a honored person who is wise, and still other just refer to those who follow the religion of Witchcraft and are very generalized terms. If you understand the cultural context of a specific term, then you can also understand the place that the person who held that title occupied within that culture's society. A small note should be made that the term wizard is derived specifically to mean "wise man" and as such does not have anything to do with today's modern stereotype.
